How often is garbage collected?

• Garbage is collected once a week.
• Recyclables are picked up once a week on the same day as regular garbage pickup, alternating yellow and blue box pickup.
• Check the Curbside Collection Schedule to confirm your collection day.
• Only non-recyclable items should be placed in the garbage.
• Curbside collection is for bagged household garbage, yellow box and blue box recycling only. No large item pick up, no leaf & yard waste.

How many bags, items or cans can be put out?

• Residents receiving curbside collection can set out up to two items every week on garbage day.
• All other garbage bags require tags, $2.00 each and can be purchased at the Municipal Office or the Code Road Landfill.
• Bags should not weigh more than 18 kg/40 lbs.
• If garbage bags are placed in a garbage container for collection, that container shall not be more than 17 gallons in volume.
• "Oversized/over-weight" bags or containers WILL NOT be collected

When and where to put your garbage

• Put garbage at the curb by 7:00am on your collection day
• Place bags or cans on the ground as close as possible to the roadway, but not on the sidewalk, roadway or on top of snow banks.
• Recycle pickup dates are on the same day as regular garbage pickup
• There are no interruptions during the year except when Christmas and New Year's days falls on your regular pickup day.

The Yellow Box is for Containers!

PLEASE: 

• No recyclables in plastic bags
• All containers must be in a Yellow Box, no garbage cans, no oversized carts, no clear/blue plastic bags
• Yellow Box material must be rinsed clean, no food residue, no oil containers

Recycling Tips

• The Yellow Box signals the driver to stop at your laneway. 
• Put your Yellow Box out for collection when it is full – or to signal driver as above.
• Save room in your Yellow Box and in the recycling truck by crushing plastic bottles & retightening their lids, flattening food and beverage cartons and tin cans, stacking plastic containers inside each other.
• Make empty recyclables the last thing you rinse in your dishwater or use them to fill empty spaces when you run your dishwasher. There is no need to use fresh hot water to rinse recyclables.

The Blue Box is for Fibres!

Only put paper products in the Blue Box.  All boxboard and corrugated cardboard should be flattened, no larger than 2ft by 4ft., tied for easy handling and left next to the Blue Box.

Recycling Tips

• The Blue Box signals the driver to stop at your laneway. If you have a cardboard box full of flattened cardboard, please put your Blue Box out as well to signal the driver to stop.
• Put your Blue Box out for collection when it is full – or to signal driver as above.
• Books: donate, trade or sell. To recycle hardcover books remove the covers & spine of the book, then recycle all portions.

Tipping fees are charged on garbage only:

• $75/metric tonne = Residential
• $125/metric tonne = Construction and demolition debris and all commercial garbage.
• $20 each = Refrigerators and all other appliances containing freon.
• Payment Methods Accepted: cash, debit, cheques

Items diverted from landfill can be dropped off for FREE:

• E Waste (Home office, T.V and audio entertainment devices)
• Scrap Metal (including white goods);
• Yard Waste (leaves and brush)
• Used Tires
• Corrgauted Cardboard

The ReUse Centre at the Code Road Landfill accepts furniture, kitchen items, books, magazines, sports equipment, toys, bikes and volunteers! 

The ReUse Centre is currently closed for the season. It will reopen in the spring!

Note: No Clothing. No Mattresses. No Freon Appliances. Only Drummond/North Elmsley residents may donate to the ReUse Centre, but all are welcome to take items home. 

Backyard Composting

Save money on bag tags and compost your kitchen and yard waste. Composters can be purchased at the Township Office and the Landfill for $45.

Compost Depots for Yard Waste 

Residents who wish to dispose of leaves, grass clippings and brush may bring these materials year-round to the Code Road Landfill, and seasonally, to the Smiths Falls Compost Site located on Highway 43 beside the Hillcrest Cemetery. 

Food  and kitchen wastes are not accepted at either facility for composting. Please note that you also have the option to take some nutrient rich compost from the Smiths Falls Compost Site while supplies last.

Battery & Cell Phone Recycling

Drop off your used consumer batteries and cellphones in the collection box at the Code Road Landfill. Ask direction at the Scale House. Or you can drop off used consumer batteries at the Municpal Office during their regular buisness hours. 

Acceptable Items: Rechargeable batteries, single-use batteries and cellphones.

Hazardous Waste Depot

Drummond/North Elmsley residents can bring their hazardous waste to the CARLETON PLACE HAZARDOUS WASTE DEPOT.

Emergency Management

The Township’s emergency management mandate is to protect the health, safety, welfare and property of the citizens from the effects of a natural, technological or human caused emergency. To prepare for emergencies, the Township has a Emergency Management Program Committee comprised of key senior staff members and agencies who meet several times to oversee emergency management and to update the emergency plan, test the plan and train for emergencies. In the event of an emergency in the Township, the Emergency Management Community Control Group will meet to co-ordinate the emergency.
