Pop Covid Testing in Perth September 25
Subject: MEDIA RELEASE: Pop-Up COVID-19 Testing this Friday in Perth
Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit Media Release September 24, 2020
Pop-Up COVID-19 Testing this Friday in Perth
A number of local health agencies have been working together to deliver services at the COVID-19 Assessment Centres in Lanark and are planning several options to increase capacity for testing in the area.
A “pop-up” (temporary) testing centre will be open this Friday, September 25 in Perth to help increase access to testing for the community and to reduce the pressure on the nearby COVID-19 Assessment Centres as more permanent solutions are being completed. Testing will be performed by community paramedics from the Lanark County Paramedic Service.
“Providing additional testing capacity for our community will allow people who have symptoms, or who have been advised by public health to be tested, an opportunity to do so close to home,” says Dr. Paula Stewart, Medical Officer of Health for the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit. “This is critical to prevent COVID-19 transmission in our community. Working with community partners has been the key to facilitating testing in this area.”
Reservations for testing will be taken online through the Eventbrite website starting Thursday morning at 9AM. Residents requiring testing can log in online and leave their first and last name and their phone number. Staff will call residents back by telephone to request additional necessary information and complete the booking process. Bookings will be available from 9AM – Noon and 12:30 to 3:30PM. There will be capacity for 60 people in both the morning and afternoon time slots for a total of 120 people. Individuals waiting for call-backs from the Smiths Falls and Almonte Assessment Centres can use this option.
Testing will be by appointment only and confirmed by phone and the pop-up centre will not be open to walk-ins. Anyone not able to access the booking site online, can continue to contact the COVID-19 Assessment Centres in Smiths Falls, Almonte, Brockville and Kemptville<https://healthunit.org/health-information/covid-19/assessment-testing-results/>. Information about future pop-up centres and mobile testing will be available on the Health Unit website and shared via social media. To obtain contact information for the COVID-19 Assessment Centres, please check with the hospital website associated with each COVID-19 Assessment Centre or contact the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit at 1-800-660-5853 or Telehealth Ontario (toll-free) at (866) 797-0000 or Toll-free TTY at (866) 797-0007.

Health Unit Urges Well Owners to Test Their Water
Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit
Media Release - July 20, 2020
Health Unit Urges Well Owners to Test Their Water and Conserve Water During Low Water Conditions
With many of our conservation authorities declaring low water conditions across Leeds, Grenville and Lanark Counties, the Health Unit would like to inform well owners of risks to their well water supply. As water levels in the water table drop, some wells may draw contaminants from further away into your drinking water supply. In addition, soil may compact and pull away from well casings making them vulnerable to runoff when it does rain. In times of drought, well owners may notice changes in their water supply including quality and quantity.
All private well owners are urged to sample their wells to ensure the bacteriological quality of their water has not changed. Water testing bottles are available at any of our Health Unit offices as well as other sites within the tri-county area including many municipal offices. Filled bottles can be returned to any Health Unit office or designated drop off site – check our Well Water Sampling page for locations. Testing is free. Should your sample results indicate poor bacteriological quality, boil the water at a rolling boil for one minute and then cool and store safely for use. While disinfection of contaminated wells is often recommended; during low water conditions this process (which requires flushing) may result in your well running dry. Call the Health Unit to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this procedure – 1-800-660-5853.
It can take a considerable amount of time for wells to recover from persistent lack of precipitation. Well owners are encouraged to conserve water before wells start to be problematic, and to consider alternate safe sources of water available in the event that there is a shortage of water from the well.
Ways in which you can reduce your water usage are:
- Flush toilets only when necessary as toilets can account for 24% of typical use in a home
- Take shorter showers as showers account for 20% of typical use in a home
- Fix leaks, dripping faucets and running toilets as these can account for 12–19% of water usage
- Ensure when washing clothes your load is full as this can account for 17% of water usage
- Don’t water lawns, wash cars, driveways, etc.
- Use water collected in your dehumidifier to water plants, etc.
- Avoid use of your dishwasher or ensure it is full before use
(Information provided by the CRCA source: Water Research Foundation)
Should your well stop providing water, do not pour surface water into your well as this can contaminate the water supply with bacteria, parasites and possibly chemical contaminants that can be difficult to remove. Removing your well cap to check water levels frequently, or lowering measuring devices into your well is not recommended as it can lead to contamination.

Parks Canada Suspends Visitor Services along Rideau Canal
Information Bulletin
SUSPENSION OF VISITOR SERVICES ALONG THE RIDEAU CANAL CONTINUES OVER VICTORIA DAY LONG WEEKEND
SMITHS FALLS, ONTARIO, May 15, 2020 – Parks Canada is reminding everyone in Ontario that visitor services and vehicle access continue to be suspended at all national parks, national historic sites, heritage canals and national marine conservation areas, including the Rideau Canal National Historic Site, over the Victoria Day Long Weekend.
All services and facilities such as lock stations, mooring areas, boat launches, day-use areas, washrooms, trails and parking lots remain closed. All events, group and interpretive activities are suspended until further notice.
Parks Canada reminds the public that the use of the waterway at this time is discouraged and at one’s own risk. Unmarked hazards may exist, and aids to navigation may be missing, off-station, or inoperable. The public is asked to follow the advice of public health experts on physical distancing.
Parks Canada understands the importance nature plays in the mental and physical well-being of Canadians, particularly now. Parks Canada will begin a safe, gradual opening of some outdoor locations in select national parks, national historic sites, and national marine conservation areas starting June 1.
Until June 1, all suspensions of visitor services and closures of facilities announced in March remain in place. For their own safety, Canadians should not try to access locations that are closed, particularly over the Victoria Day long weekend.
Please visit pc.gc.ca and follow Parks Canada’s social media channels for information and updates on the status of all Parks Canada places.

Rideau Valley Watershed, March 17, 2020 — RVCA is waiving fees at its Conservation Areas as public health officials encourage people to get out and enjoy a walk during these stressful times. All trails and boardwalks owned and operated by the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority will be open to the public free of charge until April 6, 2020. Interpretive centres and other facilities including washrooms and outhouses will be closed however to protect the health and safety of visitors and staff.
“We recognize that this is a stressful time for people as everyone takes steps to help limit the spread of the Coronavirus” said Sommer Casgrain-Robertson, RVCA General Manager. “We hope that our 11 conservation areas can provide some comfort by offering local residents with a close-to-home outdoor escape where they can enjoy a relaxing walk in a beautiful natural setting”.
Many studies show that time spent in nature reduces stress levels, enhances mental attitude and of course improves physical health. While enjoying our conservation areas we ask that people maintain social distancing and avoid gathering in groups or touching common surfaces.
“We have more than 40 kilometres of trails through mixed hardwood forests, meadows and wetlands,” says Casgrain-Robertson. “We hope families will come and explore our many hiking trails and scenic lookouts especially while schools are closed.”
Conservation Areas in the Rideau watershed include:
- Chapman Mills Conservation Area – Barrhaven/Riverside South
- Baxter Conservation Area – Kars
- Meisel Woods Conservation Area — Crow Lake
- Mill Pond Conservation Area – Portland
- Perth Wildlife Reserve – Perth
- Rideau Ferry Yacht Club Conservation Area – Rideau Ferry
- Foley Mountain Conservation Area – Westport
